Learn the fundamental Japanese numbers
What is Suuji?
数字 (すうじ / suuji) means numbers or numerals in Japanese. The kanji 数 means "number" and 字 means "character".
These numbers are the foundation of counting in Japanese. Before learning counters such as people, animals, floors, or machines, it is very important to memorize the numbers from 0 to 10.
How Japanese Numbers Work
Japanese numbers follow a logical pattern after 10.
11 = 10 + 1 (じゅういち / juuichi)
12 = 10 + 2 (じゅうに / juuni)
20 = 2 × 10 (にじゅう / nijuu)
Once you know the numbers from 1 to 10, you can easily build larger numbers.
Large Numbers
100 (ひゃく / hyaku)
1000 (せん / sen)
10000 (まん / man)
Japanese uses 10,000 (万 / まん) as a major number unit instead of 1,000 like English.
