Basic Japanese Numbers (0–10) – Learn Counting in Japanese

Learn the fundamental Japanese numbers

Basic Japanese Numbers

These numbers are the foundation of counting in Japanese. Before learning counters such as people, animals, floors, or machines, it is very important to memorize the numbers from 0 to 10.

How Japanese Numbers Work
Japanese numbers follow a logical pattern after 10.

11 = 10 + 1 (じゅういち / juuichi)
12 = 10 + 2 (じゅうに / juuni)
20 = 2 × 10 (にじゅう / nijuu)

Once you know the numbers from 1 to 10, you can easily build larger numbers.

Large Numbers
100 (ひゃく / hyaku)
1000 (せん / sen)
10000 (まん / man)

Japanese uses 10,000 (万) as a major number unit instead of 1,000 like English.
