Counting days in Japanese
Counting Days in Japanese (日 / にち / nichi)
In Japanese, days are counted using the counter 日. However, the first ten days have many special and irregular readings that must be memorized.
Irregular Days
Unlike most counters, the first ten days do not follow the normal number + にち pattern.
1日 (ついたち / tsuitachi)
2日 (ふつか / futsuka)
3日 (みっか / mikka)
4日 (よっか / yokka)
5日 (いつか / itsuka)
6日 (むいか / muika)
7日 (なのか / nanoka)
8日 (ようか / youka)
9日 (ここのか / kokonoka)
10日 (とおか / tooka)
After 10
From day 11 onward, Japanese usually follows a regular pattern using 〜日 (にち / nichi).
11日 (じゅういちにち / juuichi nichi)
20日 (はつか / hatsuka)
