The kanji 浮 is built from the water radical 氵 on the left and the component 孚 on the right. In ancient writing, 孚 showed a pair of hands lifting something gently upward, like holding a small object or supporting something from below. When placed beside water, the image becomes clear: something being lifted or rising above the water’s surface. People long ago used this combination to express the idea of “floating” — something light enough to be supported by water, gently rising instead of sinking.
