Story

状 is made from 犬, meaning “dog,” on the left, and 爿, which represents a piece of wood or a flat object, on the right. Originally, it depicted a wooden tablet used to report or record something about a dog or an event. Over time, the meaning expanded to documents, forms, or reports — anything that records or states a condition. Thus, 状 came to mean condition, status, or a formal document.
