Story

差 is made from 羊, meaning “sheep,” on top, and 工, meaning “work” or “tool,” on the bottom. The image shows a sheep being examined or measured carefully with tools. This sense of distinguishing or noticing differences developed into the meaning of difference, distinction, or gap. From this idea, 差 came to mean difference, variation, or discrepancy.
