突 is formed from 穴, meaning “hole,” and 犬, meaning “dog.” Imagine a dog suddenly jumping out of a hole without warning. That sudden, forceful movement captures the idea of bursting out or rushing forward. From this image, 突 came to mean to thrust, dash out, or happen suddenly.
