The kanji 余 comes from the idea of a person standing under a large roof or shelter, with space left around them. The top part represents an extended roof, something wide or spacious. Beneath it is a person, not cramped or squeezed, but with room to breathe. Ancient scribes used this image to express “surplus,” “extra,” or “leftover” — the feeling that there is more than what is needed. Over time, this scene of a person under a roomy shelter became the character for “excess,” “remaining,” or “in addition.”
余 shows a person standing comfortably beneath a wide roof, symbolizing having more space or more resources than needed — the idea of something extra or leftover.
