The kanji 恥 joins the heart radical 忄(with feelings) and 耳(ear). In ancient script, it represented the feeling that arises when one hears shameful words or criticism — the sting that touches the heart through the ear. The ear symbolizes what others say or think, and the heart radical shows how deeply those words affect one’s emotions. Together, they create the image of “shame,” “embarrassment,” or “disgrace.” It beautifully captures the emotional reaction to being judged or scolded.
