Minna no Nihongo - Lesson 13 · JLPT N5

What You Want, and Why You Go

Say what you want with , what you want to do with , why you go somewhere with , and use for “somewhere / something”.

How to use this lesson: This is the first time you change the shape of a verb yourself: take off and add something else. That leftover part — the ます-stem — is used again and again in later lessons, so practise finding it.

Lesson 13 at a glance

1. N が 欲しい

I want (a thing).

2. V たい

I want to (do).

3. V に 行きます

Go (somewhere) to do…

4. どこか・何か

Somewhere, something.

1. N が 欲しいです — “I want N”

[私は] N が 欲しいです。

is an い-adjective, so it changes like one (), and the thing you want takes が.

Watashi wa atarashii jitensha ga hoshii desu.

I want a new bicycle.

What do you want most right now? — Time!

What do you want for your birthday? — I don't want anything.

2. V-stem たいです — “I want to do”

V-ます → V-stem + たいです
ます-formStemwant todon't want to

Hokkaidou de yuki o mitai desu.

I want to see the snow in Hokkaido.

I'm tired today, so I don't want to do anything.

I want to eat tempura. (を or が both OK)

欲しい and たい are only for your own wishes (and for asking “you”). Japanese doesn't state other people's feelings directly — you can't know what's in their head.
❌
For others, you'll later use or . Also, don't ask a superior — it sounds too direct. Offer instead:

3. Place へ V-stem / N に 行きます — going somewhere to do something

Place へ [V-stem / action noun] に 行きます・来ます・帰ります

Suupaa e yasai o kai ni ikimasu.

I'm going to the supermarket to buy vegetables.

Nihon e IT no benkyou ni kimashita.

I came to Japan to study IT.

I go home to eat lunch.

What are you going to Yokohama for this weekend? — To see a friend.

Two に-forms: () and “action noun + に” (). With verbs both work: = .

4. どこか / 何か — somewhere / something

Question word + か = “some-”. Compare with Lesson 5: question word + も + negative = “no-”.

Did you go anywhere during the summer holiday? — Yes, I went to Okinawa.

I'm hungry, so I want to eat something.

— Where are you going? (assumes you're going)
— Are you going anywhere? (yes / no)
Also from this lesson: is another polite prefix, like お: (Your order?), (your family).

5. Real life: lunch with colleagues

It's already 12. Shall we go and get lunch?

Sure. What do you feel like? — Hmm, it's cold, so something warm. — Then let's go for ramen.

6. Common mistakes

Mistake 1: ます + たい

Mistake 2: たい negative as じゃありません

Mistake 3: purpose に with the wrong verb

This pattern only works with movement verbs: .
