The kanji 千 began as a picture showing the number ten (十) combined with a small line above it to mean “many tens.” In ancient counting, that extra line turned ten into a much larger amount — a thousand. The symbol carried the sense of abundance, large quantities, or continuation. Even today, 千 keeps its simple shape and clear meaning: a big number, one thousand.
Formed from the number ten (十) with an added stroke, 千 shows the idea of many tens — a large, complete number meaning one thousand.
Imagine you take the number ten (十) and add just one more line — that small stroke makes it ten times bigger! That’s 千, the kanji for one thousand.
