The kanji 電 is made from two parts: 雨 (rain) on top and 田 (field) below. In ancient times, people often saw bright lightning strike the open fields during heavy rainstorms. They feared and respected that power — flashes of light from the sky that made the earth tremble. The old symbol for thunder and lightning later came to represent “electricity,” the same energy humans learned to control in modern times.
Rain (雨) falling over fields (田) — lightning flashes down, lighting up the sky. 電 represents thunder, lightning, and later, electricity.
Imagine standing in a wide field (田) during a heavy storm (雨). Suddenly, lightning cracks across the sky — bright, powerful, unstoppable energy from above. That’s 電, the kanji for electricity and lightning, born from the storm.
