Common Mix-ups in This List

Words that BJT learners often confuse, and how to tell them apart.

How is いらっしゃる (irassharu) different from similar words?

Its humble (kenjougo) counterparts are おる for いる and 参る / 伺う for 行く・来る: 部長はいらっしゃいますか asks about the other side, while 私は会社におります describes yourself. Saying 私がいらっしゃいます is a direction error.

Usage: 〜にいらっしゃる (... ni irassharu); masu-form いらっしゃいます (irasshaimasu), not いらっしゃります; also an auxiliary: 〜ていらっしゃる (te irassharu). Very common on the phone and at reception.

How is なさる (nasaru) different from similar words?

Its humble pair is いたす for your own actions (私がいたします). The masu-form is なさいます, not なさります, and なさられる is double keigo.

Usage: どうなさいますか (dou nasaimasu ka, what would you like to do?), 〜になさいますか (... ni nasaimasu ka, will you choose ...?), ご心配なさらないでください (goshinpai nasaranaide kudasai).

How is ご存じ (gozonji) different from similar words?

For your own knowledge use humble 存じております (facts) or 存じ上げております (people). Answering 私はご存じです is wrong. The spelling ご存知 is also common, but ご存じ is the officially recommended form.

Usage: ご存じですか (gozonji desu ka, do you know?), ご存じのとおり (gozonji no toori, as you know), ご存じの方 (gozonji no kata, someone who knows).

How is おいでになる (oide ni naru) different from similar words?

いらっしゃる is the everyday choice; おいでになる is more formal. Both are only for the other person; for yourself use humble 参る or 伺う.

Usage: おいでになる (oide ni naru), ようこそおいでくださいました (youkoso oide kudasaimashita), おいでいただく (oide itadaku).

How is お決めになる (okime ni naru) different from similar words?

Don't confuse it with お決まりですか (okimari desu ka, from 決まる: have you decided?), common when taking orders. For your own decision say 決めさせていただきます or 決定いたしました.

Usage: 〜をお決めになる (... wo okime ni naru), お決めになりましたら (okime ni narimashitara, once you have decided), お決めいただけます (okime itadakemasu).

How is 申す (mousu) different from similar words?

Sonkeigo おっしゃる is for the other person, kenjougo 申す for your side: 社長がおっしゃいました (client's president) vs 弊社の社長が申しておりました (your own president). 申し上げる is used when your words are aimed at a respected listener; 申す is more neutral.

Usage: 〜と申します (... to moushimasu, my name is ...), 〜と申しておりました (... to moushite orimashita, reporting what a colleague said).

How is おる (oru) different from similar words?

Its honorific pair is いらっしゃる: 部長はいらっしゃいますか (asking about the other side) vs 部長の田中はおります (your side). お客様がおります is wrong, and おられる is a regional form better avoided in standard business Japanese.

Usage: 〜におります (... ni orimasu), 〜しております (... shite orimasu), 席を外しております (seki wo hazushite orimasu, is away from the desk).

How is 拝見する (haiken suru) different from similar words?

Its honorific pair is ご覧になる for the other person's looking. 拝見されましたか and 拝見してください are direction errors for customers; use ご覧になりましたか / ご覧ください. 拝見させていただく is often criticised as excessive.

Usage: 〜を拝見する (... wo haiken suru), 拝見しました (haiken shimashita), 拝見いたします (haiken itashimasu), used in emails such as 資料を拝見しました.
